The Pa sideband group was started by Emory Klienfelter back in october of 1965.
This was the first year sideband radios were available to the public. It originated in Williamsport,PA.
Emory was PA 4, there was never a PA1-3. It took a few years to take off becasue, remember, they had no internet.
I,(PA34) remember as a kid sitting at the kitchen table in the evenings listening to my dad talk to his local friends on the radio.
I've talked to the original presidents son and he will be forarding some of hia dads remaining notes from the club
that hes managed to save. As or now there is no written record of the member roster. There is a few that are known and the numbers reserved as sielent keys.
My father gave up the hobby in 1968 but I still had a big interest in 11 meter radio.
Later that year I put his old station back together(we had moved) and was back on the air at the age of 12.
Later on, I was driving in my car (around 1973) and happened to come across Ole Emory on channel 16.
That channel had been the original home of sideband radio in the 23 channel radio days. He was talking to a friend using their PA numbers.
I QSKd in and came back with my fathers number (PA 34) that I had been using since getting a sideband radio.
He asked my name because he said I sounded a little young. Not thinking I gave him my name. He came back after looking at his list and explained
that number was John from Lock Haven. I told him that yes that was my father and he had given up on the hobby. Emory came back and asked if I would
like to have the number changed to read me as the operator. Of course I said yes and here we are.
